I’m not sure how many years I have been fishing on Jamaica Bay, but for sure longer than my kids have been alive, and it never stops being great. Ok so maybe half the time you go out and sit in the boat and don’t catch a thing, BUT even those times you are immersed in some lovely nature that is so lacking in NYC. Tuesday was a classic. Even thought Monday there was a 5+ hour blitz where anyone with a rod could pull in one 30+ inch striper after another, Tuesday had a short, manageable, blitz at sunrise and then OK fishing the rest of the day in unseasonably warm weather AND we saw Humback Whales and schools of Dolphins. My Instagram blew up. I always bring nice cheeses, some Serrano ham, and maybe some nuts. So we chill in the heart of it, catch some fish, and forget about all the rest. BTW those birds are all there to eat the teeming bait below and under that bait are innumerable stripers who love the flies that Kurt ties. BTW II I could smell that whale’s breath.
