Chris and I are shooting Eating Animals again. This fall is the last frenetic push to get it all done, I think. I finally got to go to Kansas to meet Frank Reese at his farm, Good Sheperd Poultry. Frank is very important in the book and the film. He is one of the few people left to have deep knowledge of the many varieties of poultry that are now considered Heritage breeds, ones that existed before we started breeding them and modifying them for more and fattier meat. He is a remarkable man and his turkey farm is beautiful and inspiring. As before, I discovered that on a farm that is run humanely and properly, the animals are happy and enjoy human interaction. Frank’s turkeys, chickens, and ducks follow you like pets and are extremely curious and friendly.
